ALEXANDER RODCHENKO (1891-1956) [ONE SIXTH OF THE WORLD.] 1926.
42x271/2 inches.
Condition B+: restoration in margins; abrasion in image; vertical and horizontal folds.
Rodchenko was one of the key members of the Russian avant-garde art community both before and after the Russian Revolution. With his belief that that art must serve as a catalyst for social change he founded the Askranov (association of extreme innovators), was a founder of Inkhuk and a professor at the Vkhutemas. Exhaustive in his abilities, he was an illustrator, set designer, industrial designer, sculptor, photographer, photo-montagist, film director and poster artist. For this film, which he helped shoot, the director, Dziga Vertov, was commissioned by the Soviet government to show the beauty and the resources of the one sixth of the world that were run by Communists governments. Rodchenko's tour-de-force graphic approach for this poster is strict yet precise and elegantly achieved. In the bottom right corner he places the photographic head of a woman against a black background, literally in the dark, while the upper left hand part of the poster is being rolled back, like a scroll, to reveal the one sixth of the world that is red. Pack p. 202-3.
